In the 1940s, a great influx of people came to Denver as the city became the regional center for the federal government. Many federal agencies set up headquarters in the Mile High city and, with the boom in business, came an explosion in population, which required that the Denver Police Department expand. But that was nothing compared to the explosive growth of the '60s and '70s when the population topped one million. As Denver grew into a prominent city, the Denver Police Department added more police officers and vehicles.
At about this time, Plymouth offered an automobile that has since achieved legendary status among automotive enthusiasts: the Plymouth Belvedere Road Runner. The 1970 model was powered by an awesome 383 cubic inch V-8 engine that delivered 335 horsepower. Fast enough for high speed chases and solid enough for patrolling the streets, the 1970 Plymouth Road Runner became popular among police departments. Now this classic muscle car is decorated with the official graphics of the Denver Police Department in an extraordinary die-cast replica produced by - and available only from - Matchbox Collectibles.
